Shadow War

It’s late at night as I write this, and I’m sitting here with the aircon on full blast. After weeks of deluge, Taiwanese summer has arrived – with a vengeance. Still, we aren’t sweltering like they are in Phoenix, Arizona, at 49 degrees C, or in the UK, where at 30 degrees C schoolboys are insisting on wearing skirts to school if the uniform policy forbids shorts. (Schools seem to specialise in silly rules, don’t you think?)

I’ve been working furiously this week on Shadow War. In fact, I’m so close to finishing that I’ve written the blurb. What do you think of this?

A galactic war. Star-crossed lovers. What could possibly go wrong?

Jas Harrington has risen from a lowly Ensign to the rank of Commander in the Unity Alliance, which has been at war with the Shadows for the last five years.

But her rapid promotion means little to Jas. She hasn’t seen the love of her life for the duration of the war, and she doesn’t know if he’s dead or alive.

As the battle to decide the fate of the galaxy draws near, Jas readies her starship, the Thylacine, to play its part in defeating the enemy.

The fate of humanity and galactic civilization hangs in the balance, and she hopes that if the allies win, the life she’ll lead afterward is worth fighting for.

I’ve quietly put the book up for pre-order, but don’t buy it yet! When I release Shadow War in a couple of weeks or so, I’ll drop the price to 99 cents for the first 48 hours as I always do.

To feed your sci-fi hunger in the meantime, check out these great books. Both feature strong female leads, and both are 99 cents for a limited time. Zen DiPietro’s Translucid is the first book in her very popular Dragonfire Station series, and Philip Harris is offering all three of his top-notch Leah King books in one box set.

Translucid

Begin a fun, exciting epic science fiction series that spans an entire galaxy. Translucid opens up the Dragonfire Station universe with Fallon’s story.

Dragonfire Station has twists, smooth writing, and characters worth caring about. If you like sci-fi that has both tense and funny moments, you’ll enjoy this series.

Emé Fallon is a PAC officer and the security chief of Dragonfire Station–and she does a damn good job of it. That’s where her competence ends. Outside of work, she has a wife she doesn’t know, a captain who seems to hate her, and a lot of questions that don’t add up.

The doctor tells her to go about her day-to-day life. But there are things about her the doctor doesn’t know. That no one around her knows.

One thing’s for sure–she knows how to fight.

While she’s fighting for herself, she’ll realize that she and the galaxy have the same problem–and she’ll need to fight for them both.

One person can change a galactic empire, once she knows who she is. Will she end the PAC–or save it?

Fans of Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine will love this series.

The Girl in the City

With the oppressive Transport Authority controlling every aspect of their existence, Leah and her father do what they can to carve out a good life for themselves. Leah spends her nights scavenging, risking capture as she hunts for anything her father can trade for food and clothing. When she takes a bag of salvage from a dying stranger, they’re plunged into the world of Transport and its war against the terrorist organization, TRACE.

The conflict quickly escalates, and Leah finds herself alone in the wilderness, fighting to survive. Transport are a constant threat, but she finds a kindred spirit in a battle-weary TRACE operative who teaches her to navigate the virtual reality systems that connect the world.

As Leah is drawn deeper into the war, she’s forced to face the woman who tore her life apart. She must decide who she can trust, and how far she’ll go to uncover her past.

The Hunger Games meets The Matrix in this gripping dystopian science fiction trilogy.

What’s more, you can take your pick of fifteen free sci-fi books at Bookfunnel here.

Now I have a favour to ask. If you picked up a copy of The Expanding Universe Volume 2 last week, and you’ve had a chance to read a few of the stories, all the authors would really appreciate it if you could leave a review. The organiser is trying to arrange some promotions for the book, but several sites have minimum review requirements. You can leave a review here.

That’s it for this week. I hope you stay cool wherever you are.

Happy reading!
