I was answering some interview questions last night about writing science fiction, and one of them was why I chose to write in the genre. That got me thinking…what was it that first attracted me to writers like Asimov, Dick, Heinlein and even H.G. Wells when I was a youngster?
For me, I think it has something to do with interest and excitement about how things might change in the future. I also like seeing how people might react to all the changes. Plus starships, androids, aliens and amazing new technology!
But what about you? What is it that you like best about scifi? And is there anything you particularly hate? I’d love to find out, so if you have a moment, post a comment here on Facebook or drop me a line by email.
I have two examples of great science fiction this week. You may remember I included Alasdair Shaw’s Liberty, the first in his Two Democracies series in a ship’s bulletin a while ago. Alasdair recently released book three, Equality, and it’s discounted for a limited time.
I also recommend that you pick up Julia Vee’s and Ken Bebelle’s Alien Incursion, which is the first in their Cold War series.
Harry Robinson lives an idyllic lifestyle. A brilliant computer engineer, he made his fortune pushing the limits of android design. When a neighbouring planet is hit by a global nuclear strike, he feels compelled to help. A chance encounter with a group of offworld soldiers launches him on the trail of the perpetrators.
Prefect Olivia Johnson leads a Legion of disillusioned soldiers from both sides of the civil war. She blames herself for failing to prevent the attack. Now her mission is to hunt for its architect. But first, she must reclaim their adopted home from a different enemy. An enemy who won’t even talk.
The Indescribable Joy of Destruction is Johnson’s best friend and closest ally. Despite the lives they have saved, artificial intelligences are still the victims of fear and prejudice. The shadowy warship fights to defend the first place it felt accepted, and for equal rights for its kind.

EARTH 2110
War with the Ringhead aliens has been raging across the coldest reaches of Earth for two years. The aliens have one weakness–heat. Humanity has retreated to warmer regions of the world for safety.
Cam and her team of private soldiers investigate a massacre in the United States green zone. What she finds changes the face of the war. Outmatched and outnumbered, her team must contend with newly fortified aliens, rescue the survivors, and survive the confrontation. The fight will change Cam in ways that will force her to choose between losing her humanity, or saving the human race.

What’s Coming Up
Now that we’re in the final third of the year, I wrote a plan of everything that I hope to finish between now and Christmas. First on the list is book one in my space colonisation saga. (If you missed the Saturday snippet of chapter one, you can read it here. Another snippet’s coming this Saturday.)
Next comes a second Carrie Hatchett series Christmas story. I plan to write one of these every year. Last year’s was Carrie Hatchett’s Christmas, which you can download free here if you don’t already have a copy. This years will be A Very Carrie Christmas.
Then I want to write the fifth and final book in my Carrie Hatchett series and begin a science fantasy series. Oh, and I was forgetting that I need to bundle the final three books in Shadows of the Void. Actually, it makes me tired just thinking about it. I better start writing.
I hope your plans for the rest of 2017 are off to a good start.
Happy reading!
