Happy Halloween! I’m going to keep it short this week because I’m busy getting ready to fly to Vegas. That seems so weird to write. Of all the places in the U.S. to visit Las Vegas was never high on my list. I’m more of a national parks gal. But many indie writers are gathering there for a conference this weekend and I’m excited to attend too.

I’m especially excited to meet writers I’ve worked with and become friends with over the last year or so. Rest assured, I’ll be shamelessly asking for selfies with them and name-dropping like anything when I return.

That’s enough about that for now. In the spirit of Halloween, I chose two dark science fiction novels for you this week. Check out Mikey Campling’s The Wall and L.J. Cohen’s Derelict for a couple of great 99-cent offers.

The Wall

Stay Behind the Wall.
The Wall is Safety. The Wall is Survival.
But Know This: You Are Not Alone.

Far from Earth and shipwrecked on a desolate alien planet, a band of brave settlers strive to carve out a life for themselves on a range of hills while battling to hold back the carpet of deadly microorganisms that creeps across the lowlands below, devouring all in its path.

The settlers survive from day to day, but their lives are thrown into chaos on one fateful night when five of their young men and women go missing. And that’s when they see the lights. Out there in the deadly wasteland, there are headlights carving through the darkness.
Someone is coming. And perhaps, they mean to stay.

Find out more when you explore the world of Colony B, but for your own safety, stay behind the wall.

Derelict

Read the award-winning story that started the Halcyone Space series: DERELICT is on sale between October 25, 2017 and November 7, 2017 only, discounted from $4.99 to $0.99.

When Rosalen Maldonado tinkers with the derelict freighter, she’s just hoping to prove she deserves a scholarship to University. She certainly doesn’t count on waking the ship’s damaged AI or having three stowaways, Micah Rotherwood and brothers Jem and Barre Durbin, along for the ride. They all have their private reasons for hiding aboard and lives they are seeking to escape, but if the accidental crew can’t work together and learn to trust each other, they’ll die together, victims of a computer that doesn’t realize the war ended decades before any of them were even born.

DERELICT is book 1 of the Halcyone Space series of science fiction space opera adventures. ITHAKA RISING, book 2, DREADNOUGHT AND SHUTTLE, book 3, and PARALLAX, book 4 are available. Follow LJ for news on the 5th book in the series, out Summer of 2018.

A kindle bestseller upon its release in 2014, DERELICT has been described as: “. . .not the usual YA. Nor is it the usual space opera. While some of the characters are military, they’re not the heroes. In the second book, in fact, it becomes pretty clear that the Commonwealth, the interplanetary government, is no benign Federation, that there are serious cracks within society, and history has been… sanitised.

What’s Coming Up?

I picked Mikey’s novel, The Wall, to include in this newsletter because I’m also writing colonisation science fiction. I think interest in this genre is going to grow as astronomers discover more and more potentially habitable planets. Just yesterday news was released of 20 new candidates.

The first book in my Space Colony One series will come out in spring in a boxset including several other first-in-series, but the prequel story, Night of Flames is released from exclusivity in the anthology The Expanding Universe 2 in December. Then, Night of Flames will join my list of free books you can download!

A Very Carrie Christmas is waiting on a cover, and I’ve been working on Carrie Hatchett, Space Adventurer Book 5. Poor Carrie. I put that woman through so much. If she didn’t have her long-suffering bestie, Dave, by her side, I don’t know what she would do.

I hope you had a happy and not too healthy Halloween.

Happy reading!
