Underworld, Shadows of the Void Book 6
Avast There, Shipmates
Hello from Starship JJ Green. In case you’re wondering what avast means (I had to look it up), it’s pirate speak for stop or cease. In the run up to Christmas Day, it’s important to take a break every now and then and concentrate on the important things in life – like escaping into great stories.
This week I can offer you a wonderfully titled free selection of Pretty, Witty and Gritty books. In keeping with the jolly holiday season, all of these books have a humorous slant. Click here to see the selection. Personally, I’m looking forward to reading A Zombie Ate My Panties.
But that isn’t all! See below for two great scifi novels. If you like spacefaring kickbutt heroines, you’ll love Outsystem. Or you might be one of the many fans awaiting the much-anticipated fifth book in the Merkiaari Wars series, Incursion. Both of these books are in very popular series and worth checking out. (Despite the author names being similar, they’re actually two different writers.)
In 4123, the greatest colony ship ever built is leaving the Sol System, and Major Tanis Richards has secured a berth.
Demoted by the military and hung out to dry, the media calls her the Butcher of Toro. However, despite her soiled record, Tanis still one of the best military counterinsurgency officers in the Terran Space Force.
The backers of the colony mission need her to stop the terrorists trying to destroy the GSS Intrepid, while in the final phases of construction at the Mars Outer Shipyards.
Getting the job done will be her ticket out of the Sol system, but Tanis discovers she is up against more than mercenaries and assassins. Major corporations and governments have a vested interest in ensuring the Intrepid never leaves Sol, ultimately pitting Tanis against factions inside her own military.
With few friends left, Tanis will need to fight for her life to get outsystem.

The war games are on, but the real battle has just begun…
The Alliance is ready for the war games. The spectacular show of innovation and strength may change the way war is waged, but on far-flung worlds, devastating incursions have already begun. The Merkiaari are back, but news can only travel as fast as a foldspace drone.
Captain Eric Penleigh of the 501st Infantry Regiment looks forward to an easy assignment. All he needs to do is evaluate the best cutting-edge tech the Alliance has to offer and make nice with new alien allies. But when preparation for the games turns into a deadly war, nobody will be ready for what comes next…
Incursion is the long-awaited fifth book in the Merkiaari Wars series. If you like breathtaking space battles and heart-pounding military sci-fi, then you’ll love Mark E. Cooper’s latest entry in the beloved space opera saga.

How has your week been? I spent most of my time in the cafe at the end of my street finishing Underworld, the fifth book in my Shadows of the Void serial. I find I concentrate better there than at home, and I get to practise my Chinese. I now know how to say peppermint tea (bo he qing chen cha – actually peppermint morning tea) and cheesecake (cheesecake, lol).
With luck, the help of my wonderful editor, who also reads this newsletter – hi, Lacey! – and a sprinkle of magic Christmas dust, I’ll have Underworld on Amazon next week. If I manage it, I’ll drop you a quick line to let you know, as it’ll be 99 cents for 48 hours only.
I also spent some time this week planning my pre-Christmas week of competitions and giveaways. I hope to have something going on every day of the week leading up to the big day. But more on that next time.
People often seem to think that science fiction is about the future, but for me, it’s about a sense of wonder. I was reminded of this by a news report this week on a piece of feathered dinosaur tail preserved in amber. It blows my mind that we can see a part of a dinosaur almost as it appeared in real life.
I hope you find something that blows your mind this week.
Happy reading!
