Many thanks to everyone who entered the reader competition to win a signed copy of The Scythian Crisis! You may remember I asked you to write about why you like science fiction. So many wonderful, touching, philosophical, and personal answers arrived, I was blown away, and it was very hard to pick a winner. In the end, I chose this answer from Scott Oliver, which captured many different elements of what makes science fiction great.
It was a way to escape and to immerse yourself in something other than what you were used to. You could be that main character in the story, saving whatever needed to be saved. And it hasn’t been static, what we used to think was from the future, is now becoming reality. I think that Science Fiction has helped drive some areas of science and technology, making those cool gadgets come to life. And as the level of technology has increased, more cool new things maybe one day will also become reality.
And it also broadens your ability to accept different realities, aliens and more. It seems to open your mind to new concepts on how things work. You are able to read an explanation about how, say, a wormhole worked, and you’d at least not have your eyes glaze over after the first few sentences.
And it lets me use my imagination. It allows me to make the final decision as to what something or someone looked like, what they sounded like, what an animal would look like and sound like. I find my imagination is scarier than what someone else would come up with because it’s my thoughts, not theirs that would have the most impact on me. But most of all, I love to read! Give me a comfortable chair, and my tablet, and I’ll read all day! It’s a great way to relax, and enjoy the story that is unfolding before you.
Congratulations to Scott and commiserations if you entered but didn’t win. I will hold another competition soon. In the meantime, don’t forget you can receive free ebooks of all my new releases by joining the Review Crew. Before that, I’ll be launching a new series. It’s a little screwy to jump around, right? But that’s how my brain works, sorry!
