If you’re in the US, belated happy 4th of July! If you aren’t, happy July!
I’m in a very happy mood as I write this to you. Today I finished polishing Shadow War and sent it off to my editor, the lovely Lacey. With any luck, this time next week I’ll be tipping you the wink that the book’s available at its new release discount price of 99 cents for a short time.
I loved writing Shadow War and finally getting down all my ideas for my Shadows of the Void sci fi book series. I have to admit, I had a little cry when it was all over, partly due to the content and partly because the series had come to an end.
But I soon cheered up when I remembered that I’m contributing a novella to the next Pew! Pew! anthology and I have a whole new space colonization series to write!
If you answered last week’s survey, thanks so much. Your feedback has helped shape my ideas for my next series. I discuss your answers in detail below.
Before we get to that, however, check out the book offers I have for you this week. Jason Werbeloff is discounting his fantastic first in series, the sci-fi thriller Defragmenting Daniel, and S.M. Schmitz has her excellent sci fi book series The Cambria Code, on sale.
7 stolen organs. 1 vengeful victim. A gruesome sci-fi thriller.
Organ scrubbing was a bloody job, but somebody had to do it. Daniel, an orphan from the Gutter, was put to work scrubbing kidneys at aged twelve. The job had its perks: a warm bed, Law and Order reruns, and an all-you-can-eat Mopane worm buffet … Until the Orphanage stole Daniel’s parts, and sold them on the organ market.
Now Daniel has grown up, and yearns to become whole again. The cybernetic organ replacements just aren’t the same – he needs his parts back. But the new owners of his organs won’t give them up. Not without a fight.
Just how far will Daniel go to regain his missing pieces? And how much more of himself will he lose along the way?
Defragmenting Daniel is a cyberpunk crime thriller that will unnerve you. Every part of you.

Discovering we’re not alone in the universe can be a blessing and a curse.
When a mysterious spaceship appears above Cambria, Zoe remains skeptical that it’s anything but an elaborate hoax. By the time the first spaceship is joined by two others, Zoe finally admits that Earth has been invaded, even though it’s a pretty lame invasion: The aliens look remarkably human and keep to themselves. From what reporters are able to learn about them, they seem incredibly arrogant and boring anyway.
When Zoe meets Peyton, the Security Chief for Earth’s newest residents, her opinion of them finally begins to shift, although she is reluctant to become involved with someone who isn’t even human. But she soon discovers that these aliens are far more dangerous than they’ve led everyone to believe, and the secrets they are hiding may signal the destruction of her entire planet.
Includes Peyton’s Myth, Peyton’s Promise, and Peyton’s Light.

So, back to the reader survey. What I took from your answers was that most of you like to be carried along by the plot of a story, though character development is also important, and you don’t mind if the lead character is male or female. (A few readers preferred male or if the character is female, she shouldn’t be a man in disguise.) Most of you also said that scientific accuracy was important but not essential. (Phew, because I have to confess I do use some handwavium in my stories.)
Finally, I had some very interesting recommendations for classic science fiction, some of which was entirely unknown to me, so thanks for that. I have enough to read for the next few months.
I’ve started posting snippets of what I’ve been writing during the week on my blog every Saturday. My last post contained the first chapter of Shadow War. If you’d like to read it, go here.
I have something rather special for you next week, but I’m going to keep it as a surprise.
Happy reading!
