Today is my son’s birthday! He’s fifteen and we’ve had a nice day celebrating. As usual, I couldn’t help relating events in my daily life to science fiction and I found myself wondering how old he would be if he’d grown up on another planet. What if that planet circled its star at half or twice the speed of Earth? Would my son think of himself as fifteen? Probably not, though he would have aged as much as a fifteen year old on Earth. What do you think? Pop over to our Facebook page here to join in the discussion.
As well as birthday preparations, I’ve been continuing to write Tyre and enjoying the process very much. The three main characters, Erin, Isa and Martin are really growing on me and I’m having a lot of fun fleshing them out. As always, there are also baddies, new characters and new ideas on planetary colonisation in the Aeon 14 series, Building New Canaan.
Both 99-cent books I have for you this week relate to Tyre, though in different ways. Lisa Richman and M.D. Cooper’s collaborative work, Alpha Centauri is the first in another Aeon 14 series, and it’s reduced to celebrate the launch of the sequel, Proxima Centauri. The other 99-cent book is Ken Lozito’s Genesis, which is first in a colonisation series.

Alpha Centauri
The Sentience Wars may be won, but the battle is not over…
The Sentience Wars in Sol have come to an end. In the wake of war, refugees still flee to nearby stars, but there are sinister forces at work in Alpha Centauri who would turn their plight into profit.
None of this is apparent to an easygoing, self assured pilot-for-hire named Jason Andrews. Recently arrived from Proxima Centauri to visit his sister, he is sucked into a covert operation by a brother-in-law who is not who he seems. But then again, neither is Jason….
But the enemy they face has grown more powerful than any had expected, and the fate of the star systems’ humans and AIs are at stake. Jason must engage in an all-out bid to save a world he’s just getting to know, in a war he only just learned about.
