Hello from Cambridge

After being the hottest place in the UK since records were kept this year, when temperatures reached 38.7 C on 26th July, Cambridge is now cooling rapidly. Last night the temperature dipped to 1 C, so nearly freezing. After eight years living in subtropical Taiwan, will your starship captain survive a British winter? Only time will tell. Please send your warm thoughts in this direction.

I am so pleased to finally bring you an audio recording of the first chapter of Generation, book one in my Shadows of the Void space opera series. In this section, we’re introduced to Jas, chief security officer aboard the prospecting ship, the Galathea. Jas is surveying a planet for hostile, intelligent alien life. Does she find anything?

Find out by downloading your free recording here.

The audio is about 12 minutes long, so perfect for a trip to the shops (here in the UK. I know car trips are longer in bigger countries). As this is my first try at this kind of thing, I would appreciate your feedback if you have time to pen a few lines. You can write to me at jenny@jjgreenauthor.com.

After you check out this weeks’ sci fi bargains – all free – read on to find out a little more about my writing and Cambridge, and see my photo of Cambridge Botanic Garden.

I wrote a post in our Facebook group last week, explaining how my books sometimes disappoint science fiction readers. Not the kind of thing a writer should admit to her audience, right? But it’s true. The fact is that some readers of sci fi love to read about technology, starship drives and weapons. Unfortunately, I don’t like writing about that kind of thing!

I’m interested in how we as an intelligent species are going to adapt and behave in the future; I’m interested in aliens and how we’ll interact with them; and I’m interested in the landscapes of alien worlds.

I draw a lot of inspiration from natural spaces and the unusual flora and fauna of our planet. When I lived in Taiwan, I loved to hike the green mountains. Now that I’m in Cambridge, I feel extremely fortunate to have Cambridge Botanic Garden only 20 minutes’ walk away.

As you can see, it’s looking gorgeous this autumn.

Enjoy your books!
