The Story of Space Colony One

I realised I blithely send out ship’s bulletins week after week, assuming you know all about the stories that have  appeared from the starship over the years.

No doubt nothing is further from the truth.

Consequently, over the next few months, I’m going to devote the occasional newsletter to one series and give you some details about the background and premise of the story.

Space Colony One is an epic space colonisation adventure in a complete, nine-book series. Currently, books 1 – 3 are free at most bookstores.

I began writing book one, The Concordia Deception, in 2016 as a member of Taipei Writers Group, so the beginning of this story has had plenty of critical eyes on it!

It’s a multi-generational tale, as you would expect for humanity’s first deep space colony. Neither Rome nor humankind’s first civilisation on an exoplanet could be built in the course of one lifetime.

The story begins with the arrival of the generation starship, the Nova Fortuna, at the colony planet. As well as the most recent generation born on the ship (Gens), she also carries cryonically preserved project scientists, some of whom have been recently revived (Woken).

A third, more mysterious, group is the Guardians, who have arrived on an FTL starship, catching up to the colony ship in time for her arrival.

AUDIOBOOKS

I wrote Space Colony One over a space of seven years, publishing the final book, Reprisal, in 2023.

The story spans several generations of the colony and encompasses alien attacks, interstellar journeys, devastation and crippling losses as well as the triumph of hope and persistence in the face of insurmountable obstacles.

After the ebooks were finished, it was time to move onto creating audiobooks of the entire series.

Recording and editing audiobooks takes about the same amount of time as writing a book, or at least that was my experience. But it was a joy to bring the characters to life and express their voices as I’d imagined them.

Audiobook boxsets are most popular among listeners, so as well as individual books, I packaged the series as trilogies and an audiobook of the complete series.

Space Colony One continues to be my best-selling series, gathering thousands of positive reviews on Amazon and other online bookstores, commenting on the realism of the characters and their struggles to build the colony and get along with each other.
