Hello Starship JJ Green shipmate!
Great to talk to you again. I’m only sending a short message this week because I’m short on time. My sister and niece are here for the week and I’m busy showing them both the sights of Taipei. Today we were at the zoo. I’ll show you my photo of three monkeys at the end of this newsletter.
Things are moving on apace in my scifi life. The Expanding Universe Vol 2 comes out in just over two weeks, I’m writing Shadow War, the final book in the Shadows of the Void series, I’m planning the first Space Colony One novel, and I’m planning the final Carrie Hatchett, Space Adventurer series.
What’s more, at the back of my mind is the second Carrie Hatchett Christmas story, which is to be called A Very Carrie Christmas. This might be set in the U.S., in which case I’ll be asking my American subscribers for tips, or I might set it in Lapland (any Laplander readers also welcome to offer advice!).
It feels weird to be thinking about the winter holidays when it’s hot and humid here in Taiwan and unfortunately the thoughts aren’t cooling me down at all. I hope the weather’s treating you better wherever you are.
On to this week’s scifi treats. First up is First Strike, a book for lovers of kickass scifi heroines. Continuing the military scifi theme is the boxset of the first three books in the Star Crusaders series. Both are reduced, limited time offers.
With an alien invasion and survival of the human race at stake, service in the Marines was no longer optional, it was a matter of life and death.
This was especially true for Quinn, a Marine sergeant who was hell-bent on ensuring that her young daughter had a world to grow up in. But one thing separates Quinn from the others:
She’s a certifiable badass.
And as the aliens will learn, it’s tough to keep a good woman down.

Nate has a talent for space combat after hundreds of victories in the Star Crusader videogame simulation. His skills are unique, enough to gain him a rare privilege. The chance to join five other Alliance cadets and escape the dull routine of the classroom. They will enter a fierce competition light-years away in the ancient Byotai Empire. Yet days after their arrival a rebellious faction begins a bloody mutiny that spreads like wildfire. The time for competition has ended; the time of war has begun.
A handful of capital ships attempt to avoid the massacre, but only Relentless escapes. Nate and his friends are aboard, part of the few to make it out alive. Relentless is a heavily armoured assault ship, a relic from another age, but most of her crew members are dead or missing. Nate and his fellow cadets have to face the unthinkable. Under the guidance of Lieutenant Higgins, the ship’s last fighter pilot, the six cadets have just days to practice operating the ship’s fighters. There are no others. Only they can defend the ship, or face death at the hands of the enemy.
Includes the full novels Hero of the Alliance, Knighthawk Squadron and Operation Hellfire.

I occasionally hear from shipmates who are annoyed that some scifi books I tell you about are only available on Amazon. I completely understand where readers are coming from on this issue. Amazon isn’t available in many countries and some people object to its exclusivity. Unfortunately the stark reality is that for many indie writers the only way to make a living is to publish their books in Kindle Unlimited.
However, there are some other places where books are available to download for free, and one of those is Instafreebie. Have a look at this week’s offerings. Many of the books here are new to me so I’m guessing they may be new to you too.
I hope you found something you liked as this week’s sci-fi novel. I’m off to do some more entertaining in sunny, sticky Taiwan.
Happy reading!
